Departmental Research Technology Professional The appointment will be on UCL Grade 8.
There are two posts available within the Faculty IT & Partnering group in the Information Service Division at UCL: one post in the Geography Department and the other post in the Economics department. UCL Geography is one of the UK’s leading geography departments and researchers work on areas such as satellite observation, climate modelling, environmental change, AI and consumer data, with a wide range of computing needs. Research involves developing bespoke software, very large (TB) throughput processing, securely handling commercially and GDPR-sensitive data.
Research computing also underpins the department’s teaching portfolio, including an expanding range of Master’s programmes. UCL Economics has an estimated annual income from research grants of £1m, a replacement-teaching budget of over three quarters of a million pounds, a growing number of funded research studentships and a large annual budget allocation from the College. The department is increasingly using computationally intensive methods in both research and teaching. We expect this work to grow as we develop teaching and research in data science.
These roles involve close collaboration with UCL’s Advanced Research Computing (ARC) department to create consistent research computing environments across UCL and drawing on significant institutional expertise. This role provides a creative challenge for someone to scope out how to best maintain and develop the department research computing capabilities, working with agile development methodology to deliver continual improvement. If you have a preference to working in either the Geography or Economics department, please state this in your application.
It is essential for you to have proven working knowledge and experience of High-Performance Computing, Operating systems and their maintenance, directory & authentication technologies, and TCP/IP networking, including familiarity with common Internet protocols (e.g. HTTP, SMTP, LDAP, SFTP/SSH, etc.) and associated client software. It is expected that you hold an Undergraduate degree. This should normally be in a subject with a computational, quantitative, or data intensive component, or the candidate should show evidence of a subsequent formal qualification or professional experience in such a field.
We are operating hybrid working and you will have the opportunity to work remotely for up to 3 days a week if you wish.
