We have an exciting opportunity available for an experienced freshwater invertebrate ecologist to join our Freshwater Restoration and Sustainability Group at UKCEH Edinburgh. In this role, you will lead research projects on the impacts of pollution and climate change on freshwater biodiversity to inform large-scale ecosystem restoration initiatives. You will also have access to world leading experimental and laboratory facilities, field sites and datasets, and you will have the freedom to develop these to address the world’s most pressing questions in freshwater ecology.

As part of our vibrant team of freshwater scientists, you will have the opportunity to lead the monitoring and assessment of lake and river ecosystems within the UK and internationally (e.g., Africa and South America), and analyse the data collected to produce scientific papers and reports.

Main Responsibilities

  • Design and implement field campaigns for relevant projects, thereby ensuring their successful completion.
  • Collect samples from rivers, lakes and reservoirs for the assessment of macroinvertebrates and other freshwater biota to meet project requirements
  • Manage and maintain a (primarily microscope based) laboratory dedicated to the assessment of macroinvertebrates and other freshwater biota, ensuring that equipment servicing records and health and safety documentation are up to date and fit for purpose.
  • Lead the processing of biological samples in the laboratory (e.g. microscope identification and enumeration techniques) delivering high quality data for research purposes.
  • Manage sample archives and biological material tracking procedures.
  • Perform office-based tasks, including the manipulation, management, analysis and interpretation of data to deliver project reports and peer reviewed publications.
