An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Health Sciences for an enthusiastic and motivated researcher to work in Epidemiology & Cancer Statistics Group (https://www.york.ac.uk/healthsciences/research/ecsg/). 

Specialising in population-based research of haematological and childhood cancers, ECSG’s multidisciplinary team comprises epidemiologists, statisticians, health service researchers, data managers and IT professionals. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on the newly formed national biobank for children and young people with cancer - VIVO Biobank (https://vivobiobank.org), as well as  other projects embedded within the group (https://www.york.ac.uk/healthsciences/research/ecsg/), including the Haematological Malignancy Research Network (https://hmrn.org).   

This exciting project will involve working in partnership with collaborators from other organisations including Newcastle University, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, Genomics England and UK Biocentre.

Role

You will:

  • Conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research
  • Assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects    
  • Work as part of the team overseeing the data management for the newly merged biobank including assisting with the consolidation of the two databases of the current tissue banks to form one centralised database
  • Oversee the collection and linkage of clinical data across the specialists centres that treat children and young people with cancer across the UK
  • Handle clinical, genetic and outcome data including information derived from national routine data, such as datasets held by organisations like NHS Digital (https://digital.nhs.uk/data

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

You will have:

  • First degree in a relevant subject and PhD in a relevant subject (epidemiology/statistics/biology)
  • Knowledge in clinical and or genetic data to engage in high quality research
  • Knowledge of NHS processes including national routine datasets such as cancer registration
  • Have research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy and goals
  • Knowledge of cancer epidemiology/biology to engage in high quality research
  • Ability to manage and analyse data derived from sample management, clinical and genetics data
  • Work in accordance with the Research Governance Framework, the Data Protection Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
  • Ability to work as part of a team and also to work independently using own initiative

This is a fixed term post until 30 June 2027.
