Data Scientist - Smart Manufacturing

*This role is eligible for up to £1,000 Responsibility and Retention Allowance gross per annum

We are seeking to recruit a Data Scientist to join our Data Science group. Collaborating with our industry partners, we develop tools, frameworks, and applications to accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies across UK industry and the public sector.

You will work on projects applying data analysis to smart manufacturing, as part of the Smart Manufacturing Data Hub project. This is a large collaboration, led by Ulster University and involving many other partners including the Energy Systems Catapult and the Data Lab in Edinburgh. You will regularly interact with other technical teams including High Performance Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Software Engineering alongside Professional Services staff to deliver solutions to industry challenges and create societal and economic impact. With Business Development colleagues, you will develop collaborations with industry and academic partners. From small start - up companies to large multinational corporations, you will work closely with commercial teams with some work being commercial in confidence. Projects span the technology readiness spectrum from early-stage research through to commercial application of established techniques, and are implemented on systems inc! luding ou r high performance computers and cloud.Our previous projects have included predicting healthcare pathways for NHS Liverpool, analysing energy use in South-West Water’s treatment plants and building a demonstrator for a digital twin to help tackle the effects of climate change.

Duties include:

  • Collaborate with business development personnel and client subject matter experts to understand clients’ challenges and develop new projects.
    • Identify appropriate technologies and design solutions to client’s business problems.
    • Learn and apply data centric, analytics and AI technologies.
    • Help train customer staff in data science and related technology.
    • Visit commercial and academic partners, validate conclusions and present results to customers, including using advanced visualisation.
    • Publish non-confidential results to build the Hartree Centre and your own profiles in the community.
    • Contribute to specific projects with industrial clients as needed.

Person Specification

You will have experience in analysing data and applying machine learning using tools such as R or Python. While support from other members of the department is available, the candidate should have a basic knowledge of coding, software engineering and statistics. Demonstration of knowledge and/or experience in statistical analysis or artificial intelligence will be a distinct advantage.

You will need to work on diverse projects, so should have good communication skills, in particular the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds, collaborators, and clients. Hartree Centre projects are solution-focused, so the candidate must be able to work to a plan and within a deadline.

You will need:

  • Degree in a mathematical, scientific, or computer science discipline.
    • Experience of data analysis, utilizing a range of languages.
    • Experience applying mathematics and statistics.
    • Demonstrable ability to master new tools and technologies.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Good time management and ability to deliver against work plans.
    • Able to work with industrial clients.
    • Can work as part of a team and independently.
    • Able to travel in the UK and occasionally abroad.
