The role

To provide a professional building surveying service to the university as part of the Asset Maintenance team within Campus Division. The role involves working with the team to develop a wider knowledge of the Estates buildings condition. As well as identifying, and prioritising works which feed into the relevant Capital programmes and longer-term investment needs ranging from £20K to £500K. 

What will you be doing?

You will be expected to:

  • directly prepare, supervise and monitor tender and contract documentation and specifications for construction work including refurbishment and maintenance work.
  • Assist with the preparation of tender and contract / framework documentation for approved contract works and maintain project records.
  • Carry out building surveying duties including identifying building defects, condition reports, planning applications including listed building appraisal/consents, building regulations assessments, space planning, building fabric analysis, fire brigade and Environment Agency approvals.
  • Prepare reports including; project and appointment briefs, feasibility reports, technical reports, cost reports, project progress reports and chair appropriate meetings
  • Produce and manage programmes, works schedules, detailed design and specification and critical path information for projects, supervised by the Senior Surveyor in line with the requirements of the university calendar to meet operational objectives.
  • Manage contract works through the on-site stage through site visits, checking risk assessments and holding pre-start, progress, site and handover meetings
  • Undertake the ‘Principal Designer’ role under CDM 2015 Regulations on minor/intermediate projects where the works are designed and specified by the post holder, and to carry out other roles and duties in accordance with Health and Safety legislation applicable to construction and maintenance industry
  • Manage budgets and ensure that projects are delivered to the agreed cost plan.
  • Provide advice to colleagues in respect of building alteration works and maintenance needs and provide building related technical advice in support of reactive maintenance teams or facilities managers etc, e.g. in relation to fire protection, or construction methods, legislative issues or similar.
  • Select, supervise and monitor performance of contractors and subcontractors for projects.
  • Ensure all works are compliant with relevant legislation, best practice and Campus Division procedures. 

You should apply if

You have:

  • A Degree or HNC/D in a Building Surveying or Construction Project Management
  • Demonstrable experience within a data driven environment, including use of CAFM systems.
  • A proven ability to specify & deliver construction projects on time, to budget and to the required quality.
  • A deep understanding of a wide range of construction related legislation including the CDM 2015 Regulations, planning and building regulations, RRO, Equality Act etc.
  • Experience of undertaking asset building condition surveys, creating detailed reports, often working with large and complex data.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office, mobile tablet devices and MS Project
