The role

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher with experience in machine learning and/or data science to work on a World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) funded project to automate the processes in the Continuous Update Project (CUP; https://www.wcrf.org/diet-and-cancer/continuous-update-project/) that synthesises global research to produce high quality and up-to-date systematic reviews of diet, nutrition, and physical activity and cancer. CUP currently employs more than 7 researchers to provide at least two high quality and up-to-date systematic reviews per year, who have to manually select and extract around 20,000 articles per search. The role will be focused on applying machine learning and automation to the processes of article screening, assessing article against inclusion/exclusion criteria, data extraction and assessment of risk of bias.

What will you be doing?

  • Developing and/or applying natural language processing and/or machine learning approaches to extract patterns from the biomedical literature for article selection or prioritization.
  • Developing and/or applying software tools to extract tabular and text data from the biomedical literature.
  • Developing and/or applying software tools to semi-automate the risk of bias assessment (https://methods.cochrane.org/methods-cochrane/robins-i-tool) of selected articles in the biomedical literature.
  • Collaborating with other researchers at Imperial College London (further details) on the integration of tools and methods into the CUP project pipeline.
  • Collaborating with other researchers on novel methods development in a range of areas relating to automation of systematic reviews of the biomedical literature.

You should apply if

  • You have a strong applied computational and/or data science background, with experience in Python and/or R.
  • You have experience working on research projects related to text mining, natural language processing, or machine learning.
  • Good undergraduate degree in computer science, bioinformatics, statistics or other relevant field
  • For SRA: PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, statistics or other relevant field, or equivalent professional research experience

Salary: Grade I: £35,333 - £39,745 per annum / Grade J: £39,745 - £44,737 per annum (pro rata if part time)

School/Unit: Bristol Medical School

Shift pattern: 35h per week  (part-time considered)
