The School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh wishes to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Environmental Sustainability on an open-ended contract. We are seeking a highly motivated individual who can join our interdisciplinary community of geographers, ecologists and environmental scientists to undertake teaching and research relating to Environmental Sustainability.

Applicants’ research approach can be interdisciplinary, bridging the geosciences and geohumanities, potentially addressing questions of human-environment interactions over multi-generational timescales, climate change adaptation, the complex long-term dynamics of socio-ecological systems, as well as examining how such processes variously impact communities, places, landscapes, resources, and cultural heritage.

We will seek to appoint a person with skillsets encompassing, but not limited to, the study of: long-term perspectives on environmental sustainability and climate change; societal resilience, vulnerability and adaptation; critical transitions and threshold crossing events; geographically situated examples of adaptation and the transition towards net-zero. Research agendas linking studies of the past to present and future challenges of global environmental change and adaptation, and engaging with science communication, are especially welcome.

We are also looking for a committed and enthusiastic teacher who will make innovative and high-quality contributions to our MSc in Environmental Sustainability degree, and undergraduate MA and BSc Geography programmes. The role includes acting as Programme Director for MSc Environmental Sustainability, as well as elements of course design, delivery, assessment and organization, field class teaching, supervision of undergraduate and MSc dissertations and graduate research projects, pastoral care of students, and contributions to School citizenship and administration.

  • Ability to deliver high quality research and publications in the field of Environmental Sustainability, extending into the GeoSciences and/or GeoHumanities
