Job Summary

The National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) is looking for a skilled and personable individual to work closely with academic staff and their research teams in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Science. The post is based mainly on our Royal Brompton Campus with travel to other campuses as and when needed.

The Section Manager will ensure effective management of Finance and HR processes, including research grant applications and post-award management. You will monitor and ensure appropriate use of research and non-research funds and provide advice and guidance on recruitment and College processes. You will coordinate the research groups' activity; liaising with senior staff, research services, contracts management and HR teams. At NHLI you will be working closely with a supportive network of 8 Section Managers with support from Division, Finance and Research Managers. Please see below for more details on our department team and the research we support. We look forward to your application!

Duties and responsibilities

Finance

  • To work with the Division Manager and Finance Manager to monitor and report income and expenditure on academic staffs’ discretionary accounts and other ad hoc funding for research activities. 
  • To request invoices where necessary and reconcile these accounts
  • To approve, amend, and occasionally raise purchase orders, ensuring all orders adhere to the college financial regulations and purchasing rules.
  • To approve expense claims where they are in line with College policy.
  • To recharge transactions as appropriate to maximise funds available for the research groups.
  • To ensure bursaries and tuition fees for postgraduate researchers (PhDs) are charged to corresponding studentship grants.

Research Management

  • To support PIs in the preparation of new research and contract applications in accordance with sponsors’ terms and conditions, using the Worktribe costing tool.
  • To provide advice and support to academic staff regarding optimising grant income on research grant applications and awards.
  • To provide regular financial reporting to academic staff to support them in the management of their research grants and contracts, in conjunction with the Joint Research Office.
  • To monitor expenditure and overheads on current research projects.

Essential requirements

  • A degree or relevant vocational qualification, or equivalent experience
  • Experience of managing research project budgets, financial reporting and providing sound financial management advice to budget holders
  • Demonstrable success in key aspects of the role
  • Experience of working in the Higher Education sector, or for the NHS or a research funding body
  • A high standard of numeracy, as well as the ability to interpret financial information and communicate it to academic and research staff
