Senior Research Fellow

University of Oxford - Mathematical Institute

Location: Oxford
Salary: £58,284 to £73,787 Grade 10 p.a.
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 7th February 2023
Closes: 20th February 2023
Job Ref: 161548

The Mathematical Institute and the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance are collectively seeking to appoint to a newly-created, permanent, full-time Senior Research Fellow position from 1st October 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. Whilst this appointment is formally employed with the Mathematical Institute, the expectation is that the postholder will divide their time 40/60 between the two respective departments.

This is a permanent position comparable in status with an Associate Professorship in US universities. Applicants should note the possibility for MPLS Division to confer the title of Associate Professor on appointment, should the successful candidate meet the University’s criteria.

This post presents the exciting opportunity for a senior leader to join a lively and stimulating research community at Oxford which performs to the highest international levels in research and publications. As Senior Research Fellow, you will lead independent research within a broad programme in the field of quantitative finance, and in particular data analytics and machine learning applied to quantitative finance, with the aim of advancing education (teaching and research) in this area. In addition, you will contribute to the teaching, research and academic administration of the Mathematical Institute. Further information about the  activities of the Mathematical and Computational Finance research group can be found here

https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/groups/mathematical-finance and the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance here: https://www.oxford-man.ox.ac.uk/

With a doctorate in mathematics or a closely related subject, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a proven ability and/or potential to carry out high quality independent research at an international level and a track record of working in data science, data analytics, and machine learning in finance, alongside effective teaching skills, including the interpersonal skills necessary for undertaking small-group teaching and the supervision and pastoral care of students. They will also be able to show evidence (commensurate with career stage) of an excellent track record in attracting research grants and of supervising research students, together with experience and competence in administration.

We proudly hold a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award and a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our commitment to openness, inclusivity and transparency, we would particularly welcome applications from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type at Oxford.

Applicants will be selected for interview purely based on their ability to satisfy the selection criteria as outlined in full in the job description. You will be required to upload a curriculum vitae, list of publications, details of your teaching experience, a statement of your research interests, and a supporting statement.

You will also need to provide the contact details of three referees as part of your online application. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ask their referees to send their references by the closing date. These letters are a crucial element of the application file and the Department will not contact these referees directly.

Only applications received before 12.00 noon UK time on Monday 20th February 2023 can be considered.
