Fixed Term Contract - 1st August 2023 (or earlier) – 31st July 2026; Full Time - 35 Hours Per Week.

This is an excellent opportunity for a committed and enthusiastic scholar in the early stages of an academic career in Law.  You will be fully supported by your senior colleagues in developing the breadth of your teaching experience and in establishing a workable programme of research that will extend throughout, and beyond, the term of your employment in the post.

You will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment (including dissertation supervision) in Private Law and, in particular, the law of obligations and property at undergraduate level and postgraduate level.  You will work closely with colleagues in the Private Law subject area to promote the Law School as a centre of excellence for teaching and research in your field.

You will be supported by your established colleagues as you develop and execute a workable research plan by engaging in internationally recognised scholarship in the field of private law.

Candidates are requested submit a CV with a covering letter; an outline of their current and future research plans (of two sides maximum length); and two samples of pending or published research work (which might include articles, book chapters or chapters of a thesis). 

The Opportunity:

To join a team of scholars all active in teaching and researching in Private Law across its doctrinal, historical, and comparative dimensions.  The post will enable you to establish a strong teaching and research profile and develop professional contacts across the University of Edinburgh and beyond.

Your skills and attributes for success:     

  • A strong academic profile in Private Law and, in particular, the law of obligations and property (including its doctrinal, comparative, historical dimensions), with a PhD in Private Law at or near completion, or with equivalent experience.
  • Ability to design and deliver research-led teaching at all levels of the curriculum in Private Law and, in particular, the law of obligations, and to assess and supervise UG and PG students.
  • Ability offer joint supervision of research students in their dissertation work.
  • Ability to develop an innovative research profile and plan in the area(s) of expertise, including through high quality publications.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to engage students.
  • A commitment to promoting a collegial, nurturing and mutually supportive working environment.
