The work undertaken includes use of scientific Earth Observation instrumentation in laboratory experiments and on field campaigns in the UK and overseas – including air operations by UAVs and manned aircraft carrying various remote sensing instrumentation – see examples at   https://wildfire.geog.kcl.ac.uk/.

The Group are seeking to expand the team preparing and using these capabilities. The postholder will join an existing technical team in working to prepare, install and operate the remote sensing equipment and other instruments, and to help set up experiments as part of fieldwork.A key focus will be on supporting the use of the manned aircraft platform, which hosts a LiDAR, and various optical and thermal imaging sensors. Full training will be given on the installation and operation of these sensors in the air, and in aircraft operations in general.  Most of the equipment is housed at a dedicated instrument laboratory located in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, where much of the work will be conducted prior to field deployment. Trips to the Department of Geography, King’s College London Strand Campus, around 45 minutes from Harpenden, are also expected, as is overseas travel. A UK Driving licence is essential for this post.
