An exciting opportunity for the post of Business Analyst at the UK Data Archive to contribute to the development of world-class data services within the Technical Services directorate.

The UK Data Archive is the lead partner of the UK Data Service, which is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to meet the data needs of researchers, students and teachers from all sectors, including academia, central and local government, charities and foundations, independent research centres, think tanks, and business consultants and the commercial sector.

Duties of the Role

The Business Analyst will work within the Development team to liaise between Technical Services and internal/external stakeholders to improve and develop a range of information and data systems to support the strategy of the UK Data Archive.

The Business Analyst will investigate commissioning new systems as well as improving existing processes and situations, considering business and user perspectives, analyse business problems and processes and evaluate options. You will report to senior management, and clearly communicate their proposals, and successfully engage with staff and achieve buy-in to projects.  You will engage with the Project Manager to enable them to design effective plans for carrying out projects.

The Business Analyst will gather information and requirements from stakeholders, using a variety of methods including workshops and interviews. Based on information gathered, you will document clear requirements specifications and recommend solutions. During the project life cycle, you will work closely with the Project Manager and the Development Manager to ensure successful delivery. You will communicate with stake holders and involve them regularly to maintain support and contributions from them.

Qualifications and Skills required

The successful applicant will hold a degree in an IT related field or possess equivalent experience.

You will ideally hold a high-level qualification in business analysis and have had experience working within formal project management frameworks. You will be able to produce a clear business case and be able to model and document requirements in a variety of methods as well as being able to work with UML or BPMN or similar modelling notation. You will have a good level of IT literacy and should ideally have experience working within a FitSM or ITIL environment.

Since you will be required to manage relationships with stakeholders, you will have excellent interpersonal skills and a long history of developing excellent working relationships with staff at all levels of an organisation. You will need to be able to work independently without close supervision and deliver work packages within deadlines.

The post is fixed term until 31/03/2024 due to the cyclical nature of the funding. There is the possibility of an extension. Whilst this is a full-time post, a job share arrangement will be considered for the right candidates, with two post holders both contracted to 0.5 FTE (18 hours per week).
