The School of Divinity, History, Philosophy, and Art History is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in the Jacobite World (1.0 FTE) from 1 August 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter, for three years in the first instance.

The Lectureship has been created in recognition of the significance of Jacobitism to the history and culture of Aberdeen and the Northeast of Scotland, and of the unique resources held by the University and other local institutions for the study of Jacobitism. The Lectureship has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies (Margaret Jones Bequest), the Mary R. S. Creese Bequest, and the Jacobite Studies Trust.

Applicants should have a PhD in History, experience of teaching in higher education, excellent oral and written communication skills, and an aptitude for academic administration.

Applicants should have a proven research record in in the history and culture of Jacobitism (the ‘Jacobite World’). The successful candidate will contribute to the History Department’s research profile through publications and grant income generation. The University is keen to foster interdisciplinary and inclusive research, with significant potential for social and cultural impact, guided by its ‘Aberdeen 2040’ strategic plan (https://www.abdn.ac.uk/2040/).

The successful candidate will be expected to teach across the four-year Scottish undergraduate MA, to contribute to introductory survey courses in Scottish history, to develop specialist honours-level courses in their field of expertise, to contribute to taught postgraduate courses, especially the MLitt in Scottish Heritage (online), and to recruit and supervise postgraduate research students, including those based overseas who may opt for ‘distance learning’.

The successful candidate will dedicate a proportion of their time to supporting the administration and activities of the Jacobite Studies Trust

Salary will be at the appropriate point on Grade 7, £44,414 – £52,841 per annum, with placement according to qualifications and experience.
