The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) seeks to appoint a part-time (25%) Language Lecturer in Hindi to commence 1 October 2023. Language teaching in the Faculty is intended to underpin scholarship of history and culture, to support students in directly interacting with users of the language as well as navigating and interpreting texts and artefacts.
The postholder will teach Modern Standard Hindi, spoken and written, be responsible for the design and development of teaching and elements of courses, as well as undertaking administration and examining when required.
Hindi at Oxford figures as a subsidiary component of the following degree programmes:
• BA in Sanskrit (Hindi), BA in Arabic/Turkish/Persian (Hindi/Urdu)
• MPhil/MSc in Modern South Asian Studies (Hindi). In addition, teaching in Hindi may be needed by graduate students involved in research in related fields.
The Lecturer will work closely with members of the Inner and South Asian Studies subject group, and form part of a wider group of teaching staff covering South Asia, its languages, literatures, history and culture, and social developments, as well as part of a group of lecturers for various languages.
It is essential the candidate has completed a first degree in Hindi language, language pedagogy or applied linguistics (or another relevant field in which Hindi language forms the focus) and shows experience of teaching Hindi as a foreign language in a university or equivalent higher educational institution; further to this is would be desirable have a command of another South Asian language.
