The University of Glasgow’s College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences plays a lead role in addressing many local, national and global challenges. Our research makes a significant and wide-ranging contribution to knowledge, society and the economy from paradigm shifting, basic science, to tackling zoonotic disease transmission in Africa to leadership for landmark clinical trials and interventions that have led to significant breakthroughs in disease management. As a community, we have cemented the University’s position as a world-class research institution. Collectively, our efforts have positioned us 3rd in the UK Russell Group for both research income per FTE and for the Field Weighted Citation Index (FWCI) of outputs.

The School of Infection and Immunity is home to a collaborative group of Internationally recognised researchers spanning Bacteriology, Immunology, Parasitology, and Virology. Supported by state-of-the-art facilities in imaging, flow cytometry, bioinformatics, protein characterisation and backed by a Polyomics Facility, there is real scope to perform interdisciplinary work across these disciplines.

Bacteriology research in the School of Infection and Immunity currently focuses on host-pathogen interactions in line with RCUK and Wellcome Trust priorities, such as development of novel intervention strategies and vaccine development.

At the Centre for Immunobiology we aim to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive the immune response in infectious and inflammatory diseases, and contribute to their resolution. These extend to translational and clinical studies enabling a seamless ‘bench to bedside to bench’ research environment.

Our research makes critical contributions to the University’s strategic goals in Precision Medicine & Chronic Diseases, One Health and Addressing Inequalities.

To further strengthen our excellence in fundamental, translational and clinical research, the School wishes to appoint the following key posts:

  • Professor of Immunology
  • Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Immunology
  • Senior Lecturer in Bacteriology (2 Posts)
  • Lecturer in Bacteriology

Our ambition is to enhance our standing as a world-class Centre for Infection and Immunity research. These posts are an important step towards realising this goal, and demonstrate a commitment to expand and enhance the School’s research portfolio.

Successful candidates will be based within the School of Infection and Immunity, one the largest of eight Schools in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS), one of the University’s four Colleges. Our scientists and clinicians work together to promote and develop research, therapeutic agents, and improvements in patient care. The appointee will also contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience, teaching within the School of Infection and Immunity. We are committed to excellence in graduate and post-graduate teaching, and to developing the next generation of researchers through delivery of our internationally-recognised research-led degree programmes.

For Bacteriology, the posts will be used to strengthen areas of excellence whilst expanding into synergistic themes that can benefit widely across the School. Hence, we are particularly interested in researchers with interests in co-infections, novel models of infection as well as the human microbiome and strategies to combat AMR.

The Centre for Immunobiology aims to appoint individuals with research interests aligned with one or more of our strategic research themes:  Immunoparasitology, Chemokine biology, Neuroimmunology, Immunometabolism, Musculoskeletal Immunology and Rheumatology, Cancer Immunology, Mucosal Immunology and Cardiovascular Immunology.
