The MRC Epidemiology Unit is seeking to appoint a part time (2 days a week) Departmental Safety Officer (DSO). This role is situated within the MRC Epidemiology Unit which is a department in the School of Clinical Medicine. The Unit is based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and has offices, a clinical area and laboratories spread across four sites on the campus as well as additional office and clinical spaces in Ely and Wisbech, and a light-industrial unit at the Cambridge Research Park in Waterbeach. The Unit comprises approx. 175 staff, students and visiting fellows. The DSO will report directly to the Head of Research Operations. They will be the first point of contact for any Health & Safety related matter and will coordinate Health & Safety work across the Unit. They will act on behalf of the Department Director in an executive capacity, mainly as an advisor and coordinator to help meet the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
The DSO will collaborate with senior and departmental managers, research scientists, laboratory managers and support staff. They will find practical solutions to complex Health & Safety issues, focussing on the needs of the research and enabling a proportionate response to the management of risk. The role will also lead the implementation of University Health & Safety policies and act as a focal point for promoting a positive Health & Safety culture across the department. In this multi-facetted role you will lead the formulation and revision of the Department Health & Safety policy, investigate and report on any accidents and incidents, organise and carry out safety inspections and inductions, prepare/facilitate the completion of risk assessments, coordinate Health & Safety related trainings, communicate new regulations and provide monthly reports to the Department Director.
The successful candidates will be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline and will ideally have or work toward obtaining a NEBOSH General Certificate. Applicants will have experience implementing Health & Safety requirements within a high education sector. A good ability to keep up-to-date with changes in legislation and experience of the laboratory research in a scientific environment are essential, while experience in developing and delivery training and emergency and business continuity plans are desirable. You will demonstrate a hands-on, collaborative and customer focused approach with a good ability to plan strategically and prioritise work. Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with stakeholders within all levels of the Department, University and external organisations are essential.
