Abertay University - School of Design and Informatics

Location: Dundee
Salary: £29,762 to £35,308 per annum
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 30th March 2023
Closes: 19th April 2023
Job Ref: REQ001017

Abertay is a modern university with a global outlook. We have made our mark with high quality, well-directed teaching and research, and a stimulating and enriching experience for our students.

InGAME International is a consortium of games industry stakeholders comprising industry, agencies, and universities brought together to investigate the challenges to, and deliver solutions that support, international collaboration between the videogames sectors in the UK and China. InGAME International began in 2020, and has undertaken projects in two main areas:

  • Regulation, Markets, and Consumption
    • Researchers in the UK and China have worked to identify policy and regulatory barriers to cooperation and develop new modes of working with a view to creating innovative new products, services, and business models. Researchers have worked with industry professionals to understand regulation and policy, especially licensing and IP, together with market dynamics and commercial models, including in- game revenue streams. We also explored organisational cross-national interoperation, as well as cultural and audience differences to identify the relationship between developed product and consumer-base in key games subsectors.
  • Experiences, Technologies, and Production
    • Researchers worked with industry partners to review a range of gaming and other game-technology enabled experiences and their aesthetics, encompassing both the technologies that underpin those experiences and the production pipelines used to create them.

These two areas were addressed through 50 semi-structured interviews with industry professionals and the creation of a small number of demonstrator projects. The demonstrator projects involved international co-production of innovative new products aimed at testing assumptions or exploring new opportunities

InGAME International is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) under the UK-China Research-Industry Creative Partnerships call. Abertay University is the lead university on the project. Games industry project partners include Outplay, and Beano Studios (UK).

The project now seeks to appoint a Research Assistant to work collaboratively with the InGAME International investigators to:

  • plan and deliver dissemination events,
  • co-ordinate project recording and dissemination,
  • contribute to project work in project write-up and events,
  • engage with the project team,
  • and help to deliver the major project outcomes.

For the role of Research Assistant, we are keen to attract applicants with experience of event design and delivery, networking and liaison and academic writing and reporting. Knowledge of the creative industries would be desirable but not essential.

You will work directly with the InGAME International PI and Co-Is, all of whom are based in the School of Design and Informatics, and others such as industry, agency, and academic partners. The role requires excellent interpersonal, communication, and organization skills to support the design and delivery of a large-scale dissemination event and the recording of dissemination material in video format.

The role also requires experience of interpreting research data and synthesizing findings in academic output and therefore experience of academic writing and practical project documentation is desirable.

The successful applicant will have an undergraduate or preferably postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline related to social sciences, humanities or the creative industries. Additional experience and interests in the video games industry would also be valuable.

If you believe you have the skills and experience for this exciting and challenging role, please submit your application through our online recruitment system, which can be found at https://www.abertay.ac.uk/discover/work-here/jobs/
