The Department of Sociology was established in 1964 and is renowned for its research excellence. It is highly ranked in the QS World Rankings and has been in the top ten for the quality of its research in all of the research assessment exercises since 1986. REF 2021 ranks us as 1st for Research Environment and 2nd for Research Power.
The Department is one of the largest in the country and currently has 43 permanent academic staff. All are research active, and they work in a wide array of fields including sociological theory, social and cultural history, philosophy, anthropology and ethnography, quantitative social science, economic sociology, globalisation, international migration, environmental sociology, social psychology, criminology, cultural studies, LGBTQ studies, and feminism and gender studies. Journals currently edited from the Department include Sexualities and Crime, Media, and Culture and, from 2020, British Journal of Criminology.

Duties of the Role
The purpose of the role is to contribute to the delivery of our modules covering SC104 Introduction to Crime, Law and Society, SC204 Sociology of Crime and Control and SC205 Policing, Punishment and Society for 20 weeks in the autumn and spring terms of 2023-24 or other modules subject to expertise, along with the support and inclusive engagement of our undergraduate students.

Qualifications and Skills required
Applicants should hold a relevant doctoral level degree in Sociology or other social science discipline, including Criminology (or be close to completion of studies), or possess equivalent professional experience or practice.
You will have experience of working independently in teaching at undergraduate level, or possess demonstrable potential to achieve this, and experience in developing effective and inclusive in person or virtual learning environments.
This is a fixed-term, term time post until 10 September 2024 to cover a short-term need. The Department is keen to develop the diversity of its staff.
