As an Assistant Professor in Computer Science for Security working in the Centre for Computational Science and Mathematical Modelling you will actively collaborate with fellow researchers to contribute to the research strategy and activities within the centre.

The Role

You will be responsible for commissioning and delivering impactful, transdisciplinary research in the application of computer and data science techniques applied to the broad area of security, working in partnership with the university’s Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations (CTPSR) and in particular their research group on Security, Vulnerability and Resilience.

The role will allow you to contribute to the research centre’s strategy and agenda, producing research with a demonstrable contribution to society and the economy through the development of relationships and partnerships externally. You will have the ability to identify and obtain external funding to support your research. You will develop the next generation of researchers, through the supervision of research fellows/assistants, doctoral students, masters’ students, technical and other support staff. 

For the academic aspect of the role, up to 40% of the role will be teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students within the field, and contributing to teaching and learning across the group by being responsible for development and delivery of teaching. To ensure that students have an effective learning experience by providing quality academic guidance and advice and where appropriate reflect critically on teaching practice, implement improvements, disseminate good practice, contribute to quality monitoring and professional accreditation process.

Qualifications Required

A PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of research (or relevant discipline).

Person Specification

You will have an internationally recognised research profile of fundamental contributions to knowledge in the area of computer science, ideally in natural language processing and/or computer vision or related areas, but will have interests or be open to working in the security domain. With an outstanding record of producing recognised, high-quality research outputs, you will have the ability to secure research funding and to deliver projects, while establishing networks relevant to the centre’s strategy.  

Through your transdisciplinary practices, you will have the ability to inform and influence industry, business, health services and policy makers and articulate the value of your research. You will have experience supervising research at postgraduate level and have a track record of successful teaching practice with evidence from documented relevant quality assurance mechanisms.  

You will likely be expected to work on projects requiring a BPSS check

In addition, there may be the opportunity to provide an accompanying fully-funded studentship (international fees and living stipend) for projects in the area of computer science for security.
