About the role

The Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) are hiring a Research Communications Officer to help build the Centre’s external reputation, foster a sense of community within the Centre, and increase the impact of Centre research through integrated communications campaigns and activity. This will involve developing strong relationships with stakeholders and maintaining a network of external contacts.

This is a key role that demands outstanding communication skills, creativity, and the ability to translate complex scientific research into compelling content for a wide variety of audiences.

This role is part-time (0.6FTE) and fixed-term for 48 months. Extension of the post beyond this date is dependent on the continuation of CPOM's rolling 5-year funding contract. 

About the team

Established in 2000, CPOM provides UK national capability in satellite observations and numerical modelling of Earth’s polar regions. Our mission is to understand how their ice, oceans, and atmosphere are changing. We are a community of UK universities led by Northumbria University, working in partnership with the British Antarctic Survey on behalf of the Natural Environment Research Council.

The role will report to the CPOM Manager and work closely with the CPOM Director for Knowledge Exchange and CPOM Research and Events Officer.

The successful candidate will work with CPOM in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University. Northumbria is the UK’s University of the Year and is ranked 2nd in the UK for research power in Geography and Environmental Science. We are based in Newcastle, with outposts in London and Amsterdam. About you

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Experience of delivering internal and external communications (including digital communications) projects.
  • Experience of using a range of communications platforms, tools and technologies.
  • The ability to develop creative ideas to engage a wide range of audiences.
  • The ability to think strategically about research communications and the wider impact on Centre reputation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to communicate with, interest and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of different approaches to measure and evaluate the performance and success of a communications campaign or approach.
