About the Role

The Centre of Theoretical Physics (CTP) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) invites applications for a fixed-term 1-year position (extendable to 2 years subject to confirmation of funds), Postdoctoral Research Assistant position in Theoretical Physics. Applicants should have a strong research record within theoretical physics and show potential to contribute strongly to the CTP’s research projects at the interface of Theoretical Physics and Machine Learning.

About You

You should hold a PhD in Theoretical Physics and possess extensive knowledge of recent advancements and developments in the field of machine learning. You should have a passion for independent work, strong analytical skills, along with the ability to collaborate effectively within a research team. Your qualifications should include a strong research track record as demonstrated by a strong publication record in theoretical physics, as well as experience with the concepts and methodologies of machine learning. Additionally, you should have coding experience, especially with machine learning packages.

About the Centre

The CTP at QMUL is home to one of the leading groups in theoretical physics, with current members including Prof. David Berman, Dr Constantinos Papageorgakis, and Dr David Vegh, who will oversee this project. Our physics interests are quite diverse, including both the application of machine learning to problems in high-energy physics and applications of physical principles to research in machine learning. We are particularly keen to identify new synergies between the two fields in this rapidly evolving area. The position will provide the successful candidate with an exceptional opportunity to become part of a highly active Research Centre focused on fertile and dynamic areas of theoretical physics.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time (35 hours per week), fixed term appointment for 1 year, extendable to 2 years subject to approval of funds. The expected start date will be the 1st October 2024 but we can also accommodate earlier dates. The starting salary will be Grade 4, within the range of £37,182 - £42,405 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.
