We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher to join us as a Fixed Term Research Officer in advanced digital modelling for the realisation of Industry 4.0 capabilities within the steel industry. The new project officer will join the interdisciplinary research group in Industrial AI and Data Modelling at Swansea University in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, delivering responsible and inclusive digital innovations in the steel sector. The postholder will have a background in one or more of the following areas: artificial intelligence, modelling computing systems, data modelling, knowledge engineering, ontologies and material informatics. Experience of digital modelling in the steel/materials industry would be an advantage.
The postholder will be part of a newly established research centre, the EPSRC supported Made Smarter Innovation –Materials Made Smarter Research Centre (MMSC), delivered on behalf of UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) Industry Strategy Challenge Fund. The postholder will work alongside a wider and diverse team of researchers and academics across the centre’s five partner institutions (The Universities of Sheffield, UCL, Cambridge, Brunel, Nottingham and Swansea). The postholder will engage with industrial stakeholders and link to the SUSTAIN’s UK Digital Steel Innovation, supporting both grand challenges in the SUSTAIN Hub of ‘Zero Waste, Carbon Neutral Iron- and Steelmaking’ and ‘Smart Steel Processing’.
The Made Smarter Innovation – Manufacturing Made Smarter Research Centre will deliver multidisciplinary research in the area of Digital Manufacturing to put the UK’s materials intensive processing industries at the forefront of the UK’s technological advancement and green recovery from the dual impacts of COVID and rapid environmental change. The Centre will work with academic, commercial and innovation partners to drive the research needed to solve many of the fundamental challenges limiting the development and adoption of digital tools in materials and manufacturing.
