We are looking to appoint a Research Assistant/Associate in Electrical Engineering for Lithium-ion Battery Systems for a 1-year position working under the guidance of Prof Paul Christensen and Dr Wojciech Mrozik. The position is part of the Faraday Institution-sponsored project "SafeBatt: Science of Battery Safety".
Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are found in all aspects of our lives - from small portable electronic devices through electric vehicles to grid-scale battery energy storage systems. Applying LiBs in electric traction has initiated a revolution in the automotive industry that is motivated to decarbonize the transport sector and reduce local air pollution. However, like all technology, lithium-ion batteries fail, and the ever-growing number of LiBs in everyday life is likely to result in more failures. Once exposed to abuse conditions, the LiB can go into thermal runaway (TR), resulting in toxic gas, fire or even vapour cloud explosion. Therefore, it is essential that we understand the underlying causes and drastic outcomes of TR, especially in the larger energy systems.
You will be responsible for carrying out the preparation, assembly, charging and discharging of battery systems, as well as the installation of sensors, thermocouples etc and the analyses of the data so produced. Due to the nature of the work many experiments are carried out in external facilities outside Newcastle University. Thus, it is essential that you are able to travel and work for periods of 1-2 weeks on these field tests.
