The Birmingham School of Physics and Astronomy seeks to appoint a new academic to grow its interest in Direct Dark Matter searches, as part of the Particle Physics Research Group. The group’s current approach to the topic has three strands. Firstly, we are members of the Darkside-20k collaboration, constructing a very large liquid argon- based detector that will begin exposure at Gran Sasso soon. Among other activities, we are building and testing novel front-end electronics for the silicon photomultipliers to equip the experiment’s inner and outer-vetoes. Secondly, we are leading the development of novel spherical proportional counters that are sensitive in a poorly explored region of low mass dark matter particles. The corresponding NEWS-G collaboration has previously taken data at LSM in France and SNOLAB in Canada and has R&D activity at STFC's Boulby deep-underground laboratory, with a view to building a longer-term programme there. Thirdly, we are strongly involved in the MIGDAL experiment, aiming to make the first unambiguous observation of the Migdal effect in nuclear scattering, a key element in expanding direct dark matter searches to lighter candidates. Although not the immediate focus of this call, the group also has interests in the application of quantum technologies in dark matter searches, through the AION and QSNET projects.

The Particle Physics group currently has 12 academic staff, 21 post doctoral researchers and engineers, 35 support staff and 22 research students. Beyond Dark Matter, our present activities include ATLAS and LHCb at the LHC, NA62 on the CERN SPS, the DUNE future long-baseline neutrino experiment and the future Brookhaven Electron Ion Collider. We operate substantial laboratory space, including a 200m2 set of clean room facilities, and maintain a significant Tier 2 site as part of the UK GridPP contribution to LHC world-wide distributed computing.
One post is available as either an Assistant Professor (102972) or Associate Professor (35128). Applicants from both vacancies can be considered for either role, and do not need to submit a second application.
