This 18 month post-doctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) position in the Centre for Biomedicine, Hull York Medical School, University of Hull is to work within the clinical trial ‘An investigation into the effect of inhaled combined BUD/GLY/FORM on platelets in COPD as a potential cardioprotective mechanism: an exploratory, single-centre, laboratory-blind, randomised controlled cross-over trial’. This Position is funded by Astra Zeneca, and the PDRA will work under the supervision of Dr Simon Calaminus at HYMS in collaboration with Dr Mike Crooks at Castle Hill Hospital.

This research project will offer an excellent opportunity in platelet research within a clinical setting. The successful candidate will be expected to liaise with the clinical trials team, and although training will be given where necessary will be required to have had prior experience of platelet aggregation, spreading and FACs analysis.

The Centre of Biomedicine is based on the University of Hull campus. The platelet research is hosted within the Andrew J Grant platelet lab in the Hardy Building.  This dedicated platelet laboratory hosts multiple groups providing a vibrant research environment in platelet biology.  Furthermore, as holders of an Athena Swan Silver Award we are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, and follow the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.

The successful candidate will be responsible for testing platelet responsiveness within clinical samples. This will be done in vitro, using standard platelet assays such as platelet aggregation, spreading and FACs analysis. The PDRA will be expected to travel Castle Hill hospital as required to meet with the trial team. The PDRA will report research results to the project supervisory team on a weekly basis. The PDRA will produce an appropriate quantity and quality of progress reports and refereed research publications. They will work closely with the Knowledge Exchange Office of the University of Hull on preparation of materials for filing for IP protection of the clinical trial results.
