We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher in Global Health Ethics, to join Dr Caesar Atuire, Co-PI of a Wellcome Discovery Research Platforms project called Antithesis, aimed at generating tools for engaging meaningfully with radical value disagreements, polarisation, and informational uncertainty characteristic of contemporary medical science, practice, and policy. You will be based within the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the Nuffield Department of Medicine.

The role will involve exploring concepts from the global South – in this case Africa- of value systems, meanings of life, and sources of value disagreement in pre-and-post colonial African philosophical literature as well as case studies of models of radical value negotiation/resolution in Africa.

You will manage your own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. You will adapt existing and develop new research methodologies for understanding the sources of radical value disagreements. You will be responsible for acting as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on methodologies or procedures, as well as representing the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone. Additionally, you will contribute to teaching on the MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine, including supervising students and supporting placement projects.

It is essential that you hold a PhD/DPhil (or close to completion) in a relevant subject such as in Philosophy, Anthropology, Human Geography, Political Sciences, History, International Relations with a special interest in Africa. You will possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes (African philosophy, anthropology, politics, history or international relations), and you will be able to manage own academic research and associated activities. It is essential that you have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.
