The role

This is a role to perform research under the supervision of Dr. Cristina David and Dr. Meng Wang in the Programming Languages research group. The group has a strong international reputation in areas such as program verification/analysis, program synthesis and repair, functional programming, type theory, and cryptography. Recently, we also focused on applying machine learning to program analysis. The group is well connected with leading research groups globally and its research is supported by major funding agencies and industrial giants, e.g. Huawei, Meta, Amazon, Github. The post holder will enjoy the freedom to pursue research in any of the above-mentioned areas and will be part of a dynamic team of 5 academics and several PDRAs and PhD students. They will enjoy excellent academic support to advance their research career. In turn, they are expected to conduct high-quality research.

The position is 'open-ended with fixed funding' until 28 February 2026. While there is a potential for an extension, it is not guaranteed.

What will you be doing?

Your research responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting high quality research in programming languages and applications of machine learning to program analysis and synthesis.
  • Implementing prototypes.
  • Initiating publications arising from research results.
  • Identifying new research activities.
  • Collaborating with industrial partners.

In addition, although there are no formally specified teaching or administrative duties required, other commitments permitting, you may be given development opportunities to undertake activities such as teaching on Masters and Doctoral programmes and/ or supervising MSc dissertations within the School. 

You will also be encouraged to take leadership roles in the group, and they will be supported for relevant development.

You should apply if

You have (essential)

  • A good understanding of applications of machine learning.
  • A good understanding of programming languages and corresponding techniques.
  • Excellent programming abilities.
  • The ability to organise your own work with minimal supervision.
  • A track record of publications at top venues.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Experience of preparing high quality publications.
