Research Fellow INSAFEDARE

Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £34,980 to £44,263 with potential progression once in post to £46,974. Grade: 7

Contract Type: Fixed Term contract up to September 2026 

The post holder will create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within the INSAFEDARE Horizon Europe programme (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101095661), as part of the Digital Healthcare and Medical Imaging Research Group, at the University of Birmingham. The INSAFEDARE project focuses the creation of a toolkit for cost-effective and high assurance decision-making in the context around regulation of medical devices. The project will investigate the use, challenges, and opportunities for real world and synthetic data-driven validation of devices, particularly for Software as a Medical Device. 

The Digital Healthcare and Medical Imaging Research Group is part of the Department of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering, School of Engineering, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Birmingham. The Research Group’s objective is to enhance the quality, safety, accessibility, and productivity of healthcare by supporting the implementation of digital solutions for the public, patients, and professionals, underpinned by rigorous, multi-disciplinary research, development, and evaluation. We are building a dynamic team, and we are seeking a research fellow in software engineering to create and disseminate knowledge through initiating and conducting original research and through publication, as appropriate to the disciplinary area. 

Role Summary

• Work within the INSAFEDARE Horizon Europe programme and contribute to other activities of the Digital Healthcare and Medical Imaging Research Group
• Operate within area of specialism. In particular, machine learning for generation of synthetic medical imaging data, the review and modelling of data safety models and standards, and investigation into controls for data safety assurance. 

Main Duties

The responsibilities of the post holder will include: 

• Identification, categorisation and knowledge curation of state-of-the-art digital health technologies, innovations, and applications. Including ontological capture and analysis.
• Review, capture, and formal modelling of standards and guidance relating to data and big data safety and quality.
• Identification of data failure modes, using statistical methods, and how their risks can be appropriately managed or mitigated.
• The creation of systems for the generation of synthetic medical images, using tools such as generative adversarial networks (GAN).
• Analyse and interpret data.

Person Specification

• Higher degree (PhD or one near to completion) or equivalent experience in areas such as Medical Informatics, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Image Processing, or a related field.
• Experience in machine learning and AI technologies for synthetic data generation.
• Awareness of automated image processing and classification techniques.
