About us

RAL Space is involved in all aspects of the design, manufacture, assembly and test of hardware and software for space-based and ground-based scientific instruments. An important part of this work is the Product Assurance function, provided by the RAL Space Product Assurance Group from which Product Assurance Managers are assigned to each of the projects in the department. 

The role

The RAL Space Product Assurance Group is looking to appoint a (Senior) Product Assurance Specialist.

A Senior Product Assurance Specialist would be expected to act as lead Product Assurance Manager for a portfolio of projects. The role includes responsibility for writing the Product Assurance Plan then ensuring that the activities it prescribes are followed to provide appropriate control and records of materials and processes, dependability, safety, EEE components, and for quality assurance measures including supporting and auditing suppliers. The PA Manager is the formal point of contact with the customers and suppliers on all Product Assurance matters. You will have more junior PA Specialists working with you and you will need to work as a team to bring projects to fruition.

A Product Assurance Specialist would be expected to support a Senior Product Assurance Specialist on a larger project or lead (with support) one of our medium or small projects.

There may be some need for (international) travel on an ad-hoc basis, occasionally with overnight stays.

Shortlisting & Interview Criteria 

To be considered for this position at Band D you will demonstrate:

  • Experience in a quality control field but not limited to aerospace (preference is for space experience but we would be keen to have applications from a range of backgrounds, e.g. software/pharmaceutical/automotive/etc.)
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM subject, or, a strong record of professional development
  • Work experience of a scientific, engineering or technical nature
  • Excellent written communication
  • Understanding the many key physical and engineering challenges of building equipment
  • Excellent oral communication
  • Evidence of effective time management and prioritisation
  • Evidence of thoroughness and attention to detail

To be considered at Band E you will also demonstrate:

  • Experience as a Product Assurance Manager
    • Including (but not limited to): NRB chairpersonship, gateway chairing, declared list authorship, etc.
  • Lead projects as a Product Assurance Manager and be able to work autonomously
  • Understanding the many key physical and engineering challenges of building equipment
  • Excellent oral communication
  • Evidence of effective time management and prioritisation
  • Evidence of thoroughness and attention to detail
