The Diabetes Research Centre and NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre are looking to recruit a talented, motivated individual to join an established, successful research team and contribute to a programme of work focussing on understanding how the physical behaviours that comprise the 24-hour day (from sleep to physical activity) can be harnessed in the prevention or management of long-term conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and obesity, or how they interact with common weight loss or glucose lowering therapies.

The appointed individual will join the Leicester Lifestyle and Health Research Group, as part of the Lifestyle Theme of the prestigious NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).

They will work closely with senior academics/researchers and other team members to provide senior statistical support to the research studies conducted across the lifestyle Theme. This include playing a pivotal role in the set-up and management of novel adaptive platform trial, which will form an essential component of the BRC Lifestyle Theme. They will also work across a variety of projects, many in a lead capacity, to advance their independent research career, which may include collaborating with other key groups within the University including the Leicester Real-World Evidence Unit, Biostatistics and the Genetic Epidemiology groups

They will be based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre (Leicester General Hospital), which is internationally recognised for its research in diabetes, obesity, and lifestyle behaviours, including within the most recent results of the Research Excellence Framework (2021), where University of Leicester was ranked 2nd in both Sports Science and Clinical Medicine (out of 31 and 61 institutions respectively (Research Excellence Framework 2021 results | University of Leicester).The Leicester Diabetes Centre also hosts the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) East Midlands, the NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre: Leicester, and the Centre for Ethnic Health Research.

The post provides an excellent opportunity for an ambitious researcher to work within a novel priority area, and contribute to the ongoing development of our Research Centre alongside advancing their independent research career.

About you

As a Research Fellow (G8), you will have a PhD in relevant area (medical statistics/epidemiology) and significant research experience and skills in the research area. We are looking for an individual who has advanced knowledge and experience of various trial designs (Phase 2 to 3) along with some experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • Bayesian methodologies within clinical trials, including adaptive features.
  • Mendelian randomization.
  • Bioinformatics, with application to ‘-omics’ techniques that support mechanistic insight.
  • Multi-level modelling with repeated measures.
  • Advanced coding in R or Python.

You will have the ability to produce research outputs that are internationally recognised and of a quality aspiring to be world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour in time for the next REF cycle (2028), and experience of supervising undergraduate/postgraduate students and/or junior members of research staff. As such, you will have the ability to communicate effectively with staff and/or students at all levels and across disciplines, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
