Dementia is a global healthcare emergency with numbers of sufferers currently estimated to be over 50 million worldwide. To date there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression.  The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is a UK wide initiative driving forward research to understand the cause and identify novel treatments for dementia.

The UK Dementia Research Institute and the Division of Infection and Immunity at Cardiff University are inviting applications for a Grade 4 Technician position available within a laboratory investigating the immune system in Alzheimer’s disease.  Based at the Dementia Research Institute, Cathays Campus, the post-holder will be a member of the complement group working with Dr Sarah Carpanini.

The post is funded by the Dementia Research Institute to explore the interplay between the complement system and T-cells in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The ultimate aim of the work is to identify disease-relevant antigens and test whether variants in complement alter the T-cell response in Alzheimer’s disease. The role will involve a number of techniques including programming (R, Bash, Python), handling peripheral blood mononuclear cells and T-cell expansion assays.

Candidates should ideally have practical experience of both T-cell assays and computer programming or equivalent work-related experience.

This position is full time (35 hours per week), available from 1st April 2024 and fixed term for 9 months.

Salary: £26,444 - £29,605 per annum (Grade 4). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University ae usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.
