Our renowned team of patient safety researchers has a new and exciting opportunity available within the Yorkshire Quality and Safety Research Group. We will lead the safety stream of work within the NIHR Policy Research Unit for Quality, Safety and Outcomes (NIHR PRU, QSO) which focuses on three linked areas of national importance: Health and Social Care Quality, Safety and Outcomes. This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of policy and research, delivering research and evidence that addresses national policy priorities. There is scope within this role for shaping the direction and scope of the research and the focus of the role depending on the particular skills of the successful applicant and their own career development needs.

The Research Fellow will work in the patient safety arm of the NIHR PRU, QSO. The PRUs are funded to assist government and relevant bodies to draw on the latest evidence when making policy decisions about health and social care delivery. 

The Research Fellow will support the senior research fellow in playing an active role in planning and delivering research with a wider academic team that is able to address future health and social care needs for evidence in the domain of patient safety. The Research Fellow will largely conduct qualitative research including qualitative research interviewing, ethnographic methods (e.g. non-participant observations) and thematic/framework analysis as well as contribute to systematic reviews. 

You will work closely with senior team members to deliver patient safety research programmes and will support the senior policy research fellow in study design, recruitment and data collection and analysis. The role will also include helping to obtain necessary ethical and governance approvals at project outset, for which support will be provided. Other responsibilities will include literature searching, working collaboratively on funding applications, providing regular progress reports, disseminating the findings in different formats, including but not limited to publications, presentations, blogs, infographics, website content, brief reports. There is a strong focus on stakeholder engagement and impact, making this an ideal position for those who are keen to build their networks, develop their expertise in safety science and deliver research that makes a difference to national decisions about how best to improve patient safety through regulation, incentives, education, guidance etc.

Support will be available from a Research Administrator. Mentorship and guidance will be provided by the senior policy research fellow.
