We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a Research Assistant with a background in a life sciences laboratory environment to join the Dr. Ricardo A. Fernandes group and the newly established Protein Production Platform at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Oxford Institute (COI), Nuffield Department of Medicine.
COI research focuses on developing novel immunotherapies and vaccine strategies against cancer and infectious disease. These advances are driven by fundamental discoveries in cellular, molecular, and structural biology in health and disease.
You will be responsible for designing, expressing, and purifying recombinant proteins from mammalian, insect, or bacterial cells, performing molecular cloning techniques, and maintaining DNA stocks for the project. You will be tasked with determining the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses using specialist scientific equipment in a laboratory environment and conducting biophysical, biochemical, and cellular assays to characterise the activity of synthetic proteins. You will also be responsible for managing your own tasks, projects, and administrative activities, where appropriate. This involves small-scale project management and coordinating multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.
To be successful in this role, hold a BSc in biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry, biotechnology, or related scientific areas along with experience in following and adapting protocols and selecting appropriate experimental methodologies. You will have experience in laboratory support in a life science laboratory and familiarity with the underlying principles of recombinant protein expression and purification. You will be highly organized, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage and catalogue large quantities of samples. You will also have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact equally effectively with senior academic staff, researchers, and support staff and the flexibility to work independently and as part of a team.
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.
