Research Officer Mixed Methods Sociological Research

Salary from £40,229 to £48,456 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £52,095 pa inclusive of London allowance

This is a fixed term appointment for 9 months.

The International Inequalities Institute (III) is one of the world’s leading research centres on inequality, its causes and consequences. The institute is active in several research areas and encourages interdisciplinary dialogue.

We wish to recruit a Research Officer for a 9-month post from 1st October 24 until 30th June 2025 to work on a UKRI-funded project UK Voices: new methods for understanding the impact of social change on individual lives.  The role provides an opportunity to work on an exciting pilot project that aims to augment UK data infrastructure by developing a mixed-methods, repeated cross-sectional data resource. The ultimate aim is to collect detailed qualitative data on a very large and representative sample of the British population which can thus complement established quantitative datasets.

The post will start in October 2024.

Candidates should have:

• A completed PhD (or close to completing a PhD by the post starting date) in a social science discipline or subject area relevant for the successful conduct of research on individuals’ experiences of social change or equivalent academic experience
• Proven experience of carrying out qualitative interviews and understanding of related risks and ethical issues
• Proven experience of conducting analysis of qualitative interview material and appreciation of a range of approaches to qualitative analysis
• A commitment to working on creating infrastructure for the social sciences that facilitates mixed methods analysis at scale
• Evidence of organisational skills and ability to prioritise to enable the project to stay on track
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to present research findings to a variety of academic and non-academic audiences
• Ability to work as flexibly as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary research team
