The Role
Mathematics and Statistics Support Assistants work in the sigma drop-in centre to provide support to students with a range of abilities and skills from across the Coventry University Group who require help with their studies. The team offer support to students studying a range of disciplines using a broad spectrum of mathematical knowledge. If required, you will refer students to colleagues who have greater knowledge and understanding in their field of study.
In this role you will facilitate group work where appropriate and manage the facilities whilst you are on duty, ensuring a quiet and conducive environment and fair systems of supporting everyone at busy times. You will also manage the recording system of student visits.
You will join our core staff to make up a team of support assistants with a diverse range of expertise across mathematics and statistics. You will be required to work flexibly to provide support as and when needed. At certain times of the year, when our drop-in service is very busy, extra hours may be available.
Our Successful Candidate
Our successful candidate will hold a degree in Mathematics, which covers a broad spectrum of both pure and applied mathematics. You will have experience teaching mathematics to at least A level (or equivalent) standard.
You will have the knowledge and understand of mathematical topics including differential and integral calculus, differential equations, vectors, matrices and complex numbers. Knowledge of mathematical software such as Matlab would be an advantage but is not essential.
You will have excellent inter-personal skills and the ability to tailor your teaching style to support a diverse range of students. An ability to gently probe student understanding to discern where exactly they need help is vital, as are a friendly and welcoming disposition.
