Mary Immaculate College wishes to appoint an Assistant Professor (Assistant Lecturer Grade) in Mathematics Education on a full-time, permanent basis.

The Department of STEM Education is seeking an innovative and involved faculty member to teach on Education programmes within the Faculty of Education. The person appointed will have duties in the area of Mathematics Education. They will also have general duties in the area of education, e.g., supervision of School Placement, supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research.

Commitment to high-quality teaching and learning in a student-centred environment is important. Enthusiasm for a multi-disciplinary environment is desired with experience in working in integrated STEM environments. The person appointed must exhibit evidence of strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research and continued scholarly activity.

Essential Qualifications & Skills
(i.e. those, without which, a candidate would not be able to do the job):

In order to be considered for this post, applicants will have:

  1. A postgraduate qualification in Mathematics Education at doctoral level or demonstrable evidence of progression towards completion of a PhD. Applicants who do not have a PhD must have a relevant qualification at master’s level;
  2. A teaching qualification at primary level recognised by, or eligible for recognition, by the Teaching Council;
  3. A minimum of three years’ relevant teaching experience, at least two years of which are in primary teaching, with demonstrated expertise in teaching mathematics across age groups;
  4. Specialist expertise in Mathematics Education;
  5. Demonstrable knowledge of theory and practice relating to high-quality mathematics instruction at primary level, with a capacity to design and deliver high quality courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  6. Evidence of capacity to conduct, complete and publish research in the field of mathematics education and a record of scholarly work demonstrating potential to become a significant contributor in their field;
  7. Knowledge of contemporary developments in the field of Mathematics Education including recent curricular and policy developments relevant to the area in Ireland;
  8. Satisfactory experience in on-line education, blended, distance and flexible learning routes;
  9. Excellent interpersonal, communications and organisational skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, include the following:

  • programme/module design, lecturing, tutorial work;
  • lecturing, and associated development of innovative teaching, learning and assessment strategies;
  • commitment to pursuing a research agenda and publishing research;
  • supervision of placement, undergraduate and postgraduate research;
  • academic administration including attendance and participation in meetings of the Department of STEM Education, Faculty of Education, and other groupings;
  • attendance and participation in all meetings of Examination Boards;
  • continued delivery/development of digital technology-related partnerships / outreach / engagement activities
  • consultation / guidance with students and the broader learning community.
