We are seeking two Senior Data Scientists to work with the research and data services team as part of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)-funded Geographic Data Service (GeoDS - www.geods.ac.uk ). This sits within a broader initiative: the ESRC Smart Data Research UK programme (www.sdruk.ukri.org/).
Smart Data Research UK (SDR UK) is an investment of £22 million in new data services, enabling researchers across the UK to access new forms of smart data. Smart data are data generated through everyday interactions with the digital world, including via mobile apps, navigation systems, social media, and shopping. It offers a powerful opportunity to understand society and improve lives.
The Geographic Data Service leads academic collaboration with industry, government, and the third sector to extract value from Smart Data and enable groundbreaking research. Our mission is to employ geographic methodologies that integrate diverse Smart Data sources with nationally representative administrative and statistical data. We identify economic and social inequalities within and between regions, conduct research into their underlying causes, and inform policies aimed at alleviating disparities, fostering greater prosperity and equal opportunities for all. GeoDS extends a legacy of research and impact by the ESRC Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC - www.cdrc.ac.uk ). The roles are based at the University of Liverpool, however the Geographic Data Service is a collaborative centre with University College London, University of Oxford and the University of Edinburgh.
The roles are a dynamic and varied position that combine technical expertise and collaborative leadership to support innovative research—most of which has a distinct geographic dimension—as well as the smooth operation of the data service itself. You will leverage your advanced skills in programming (Python, R), geospatial analytics, and large language models (LLMs) to develop, deploy, and maintain robust, data-driven applications and workflows. You will work closely at the intersection of academia and industry, translating complex spatial datasets and analytics into practical solutions that address real-world challenges. The roles demand experience in Linux environments, collaborative project management through platforms such as GitHub, and the ability to effectively communicate technical solutions to diverse stakeholders. Beyond technical contributions, the roles also involve managing and coordinating team activities, ensuring efficient operational practices, and fostering strong, productive relationships both internally and externally.
You should have a PhD (or equivalent industry experience) in Computer Science/Geographic Information Science or allied discipline with a strong programming component, with awareness of quantitative methods and social science relevant datasets.
These roles are offered on a fixed term basis until May 2027.
These roles are eligible for sponsorship under the skilled worker route.
