Research Assistant (Based in Manchester)

University of Stirling

Location: Manchester
Salary: £30,805 to £37,174
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 7th May 2025
Closes: 21st May 2025
Job Ref: FAC02037

A multidisciplinary team of researchers, patient representatives and health professionals led by the University of Salford (Manchester) are working together to co-develop an approach that would assist people with asthma and breathing pattern disorder to change their breathing behaviours. There is some evidence that breathing retraining exercises can reduce symptoms of breathlessness in people with asthma but the effects may be small. This may be because people need to change their postural muscle patterns which can interfere with breathing but do not understand how to do so.

Drawing on our previous work of a breathing visualization system as well as a physiotherapy treatment we have developed for muscuskoletal pain, called Cognitive Muscular Therapy (CMT), we would like to codevelop and evaluate this treatment to be used by respiratory physiotherapists in clinics.

As part of this project, Psychology, Faculty of Natural Sciences is offering a part-time Research Assistant position. You will work with Dr Wendy Maltinsky as well as with Professor Stephen Preece (University of Salford) to undertake the research for this project.

The post requires regular attendance to the lab at the University of Salford to interview patients and physiotherapists. For this reason we are looking for a candidate who is local to the Manchester area as travelling expenses from Stirling will not be paid.
