Are you a keen teacher of counselling and psychotherapy? Birkbeck, University of London, is looking for an experienced psychodynamic or psychoanalytic Lecturer to join our teaching team and help shape our future going forwards.  

We are seeking a Lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy on a permanent, part-time contract, to join Birkbeck's Centre for Counselling. Birkbeck's Counselling Centre is a centre of excellence for counselling and psychotherapy studies that has been offering a range of courses for students for over 50 years. 

Main responsibilities will be to:

  • Teach and inspire students across various settings, from small tutorials to large lectures
  • Deliver engaging teaching materials and methods
  • Supervise student projects and provide academic guidance
  • Engage in research activities and contribute to the school's research objectives
  • Participate in outreach and engagement activities to enhance public understanding of your discipline.

As Lecturer you will: 

  • Be an experienced psychodynamic counsellor/psychotherapist or psychoanalytic psychotherapist with substantial post-qualification experience, some of which will be in a public setting,
  • Have thorough knowledge of different types of teaching methods and strategies appropriate to counselling/psychotherapy (in particular, both experiential and academic teaching methods),
  • Have experience of curriculum planning and development on counselling and related programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level,
  • Have experience of successfully leading counselling and psychotherapy programmes or modules.

This opportunity would build on experience as a counsellor or psychotherapist in clinical practice, and as a psychodynamic or psychoanalytic practitioner training counsellors in further or higher education.

Salary and benefits

£43,636 rising to £60,018 per annum - pro rated for part time. 

Grade LLEC, quoted is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
