We are looking to appoint a skilled technician who will be based in the Mechanics, Materials and  Design Division at the Department of Engineering's site in Central Cambridge. The Division provides a large amount of undergraduate teaching in the areas of mechanics and materials. The teaching courses are supported by laboratory exercises performed by the undergraduate students, and these exercises are frequently revised and updated. The equipment in the teaching laboratories includes, but is not limited to; microscopy, mechanical testing equipment and facilities for heat treatment and NDT analysis.

Reporting to the Materials Laboratory Manager, you will provide highly technical support to ensure the smooth running of the materials teaching laboratories. This includes providing advice to staff and students on using existing experimental techniques or developing new ones, supporting teaching activities and maintaining the equipment in the laboratories. There may be a requirement to manage a small budget for the purchase of equipment and specimens to support experimental activity. 

The successful applicant will have a practical experience of specialised laboratory activity and equipment and knowledge in a materials engineering related subject. You should also possess good communication and IT skills with working specialist knowledge of relevant regulations and good practice. The ability to work to a high degree of precision and accuracy in the manufacture of mechanical parts is desirable. Experience of providing training to groups and individuals is also required.
