Research Assistant (Fixed Term)

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented research assistant to join our dynamic research team at the Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS) at the University of Cambridge (https://www.mrl.ims.cam.ac.uk). This position offers an outstanding opportunity to work within Dr. Maria Chondronikola's group, embedded in a highly collaborative and internationally renowned research environment.

The successful candidate will play a role in advancing cutting-edge research focused on understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying metabolic complications associated with obesity. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with Professor Sir Stephen O'Rahilly's group and other investigators within the IMS.

The role of this position is to assist with the implementation of clinical research studies using stable isotope tracer methodologies and analysis of the collected blood/tissue samples.

Main duties include:

• Conduct bench work to prepare blood and tissue samples for analysis
• Perform gas-chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis of human and biological samples
• Prepare intravenous (IV) infusion solutions in accordance hospital protocols and relevant UK healthcare regulations
• Accurately mix and compound sterile stable isotope tracers into IV solutions, ensuring precise dosages and concentration
• Maintain proper documentation of all prepared solutions, including batch records, preparation logs, and any deviations from standard procedures.
• Sample management and organization
• Assist in ensuring laboratory compliance with on safety and other regulations
• Keeping up to date the consumable inventory and coordinating the timely submission of purchase orders.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or a related scientific field (or equivalent work experience).
• Proven experience operating GCMS systems, basic trouble shooting and method set-up and validation.
• Knowledge of aseptic techniques and standards for IV solution preparation, including UK-specific guidelines and regulations.
• Proven experience data analysis software related to GCMS (e.g., ChemStation, MassHunter, etc.).
• Knowledge of laboratory health and safety standards
• Knowledge of working with human samples, the human tissue act and regulatory compliance
• Familiarity with stable isotope data analysis
• Outstanding organisational and record-keeping practices and be able to independently manage long-term projects to meet deadlines.
• Experience in the proper use of automatic pipettes, balances, and centrifuges, including complete understanding and use of metric units of measure.
• Willingness to work flexible hours (e.g., occasional evenings, early mornings or weekends) and assist multiple group members with their projects.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Preferred qualifications:

• Proven experience in sterile compounding or IV infusion solution preparation, preferably in a hospital, clinic, or pharmacy setting.
• Strong understanding of chemical analysis and mass spectrometry techniques.
• Experience with sample preparation, calibration, and method validation.
• Good computer skills in the use of office software (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
