We invite applications for a Senior Lecturer in Earth System Science to bring highly complementary skills and experience to those of Professor Martin Wooster’s research group (https://wildfire.geog.kcl.ac.uk/) whose current main science foci are Thermal EO and Landscape Fire. The Senior Lecturer will target growth in one or more complementary areas, e.g. environmental modelling, optical EO, vegetation, agricultural and/or trace gas remote sensing - strengthening and widening the utilisation of EO data addressing critical questions of societal relevance.

Candidates should possess a PhD, evidence of high-quality academic output, teaching experience, an established research profile and expertise to expand the Groups work in one or more of the complementary areas identified for growth. They will make a major contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate degree teaching, and provide academic leadership in teaching and supervision at all levels. They will have excellent communication skills, proven ability to initiate and lead research projects, and a record of research grant income. Experience or familiarity with the UK academic environment is advantageous. They will carry out administrative duties at senior level, and have a commitment to collegiality and an ability to engage with researchers, practitioners and policy makers. They will be responsible to the Head of Department of Geography.

This is a full time post (XX Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract with a 3-year probation period.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. PhD qualified in Environmental Modelling, EO, Land or Atmospheric Science, Physical Geography or another relevant field, with skills clearly highly complementary to the existing research group such as to expand its capabilities/science in growth areas identified above.
  2. Experience of designing/convening/delivering modules involving one or more of Environmental Science, Earth System Modelling, Earth Observation, Spatial Data Science or related subjects.
  3. Experience of innovative and effective relevant teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  4. Experience of supervising research, including primary or co-supervision of at least one PhD student
  5. Demonstrated ability, through publications, to make significant contributions to knowledge
  6. Demonstrated success at obtaining and managing research grants as PI or Co-I
  7. Demonstrable interest in research impact and/or public engagement
  8. Demonstrable potential to be an invaluable colleague, to discharge administrative duties efficiently and collaborate effectively across disciplinary and/or department lines, and provide new and complementary foci and skills to those of Professor Wooster’s research group in one or more research areas identified for growth.

Desirable criteria

  1. Completion of appropriate training in Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice
  2. Willingness and ability to help develop funding and coordination of airborne EO campaigns
  3. Completion of appropriate training in equal opportunities, diversity, and inclusion
  4. Experience of academic leadership in education (e.g. as programme lead) or in the wider discipline
  5. Familiarity with the UK education system and physical geography discipline
  6. Experience of teaching Spatial Data Science at undergraduate level
