About the role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and efficient individual to lead the Unit's computing team, taking responsibility for the IT service and infrastructure.
You will be responsible for the creation of the Unit's IT vision and its delivery through a small team of dedicated IT professionals; you'll line manage 4 staff. Using a combination of project work and the delivery of day-to-day services, you will ensure that IT creates the digital environment to enable the Unit to fulfil its research goals, as well as providing the tools to support the delivery of the Unit's administrative functions.
The University of Cambridge is undertaking a significant programme of change to integrate and unify IT services across the organisation and improve cybersecurity. You will be a motivated participant, representing the needs of the Unit both within the School and at University level, and actively leading it through this, as well as other important strategic projects.
This is a full time or part time role (minimum 30 hours per week). We are happy to consider differing patterns for completing these hours across 4 or 5 days a week. We support hybrid working and so would not expect attendance in the office every working day, although an average minimum of 2 days a week is essential.
About you
You'll be educated to degree level (or equivalent) and have significant technical and management experience in either higher education or a commercial environment.
An aptitude and enthusiasm for leading a team, as well as a strong ability to build relationships at all levels of the organisation, are critical.
You'll be able to demonstrate significant experience in the definition, approach, facilitation and delivery of medium-scale projects. The successful candidate will show evidence of strong operational leadership in the design, procurement, installation, operation, maintenance, and effective use of IT infrastructure and its performance.
A working knowledge of a majority the following will be required: the design, maintenance and operation of [Windows, Mac, iOS] clients, Cisco networking, relevant server environment/s, centralised authentication service/s, automated installation of OS and software deployment, virtualisation and web.
You will also demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, clear and concise communication and financial acumen. Experience in scientific computing, including high performance computing, would be beneficial.
Please ensure that you upload a covering letter and CV in the Upload section of the online application. The covering letter should outline how you match the criteria for the post and why you are applying for this role. If you upload any additional documents which have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application.
Please include details of your referees, including email address and phone number, one of which must be your most recent line manager.
