The Office of the Independent Adjudicator is the independent body set up to review unresolved student complaints about higher education providers in England and Wales. They are passionate about fairness, and believe that complaints provide important learning to improve the experience for all students.

The OIA review unresolved complaints from students about their provider and make recommendations for providers to put things right if they have gone wrong. They share learning from complaints to help improve policies and practices across the sector, and contribute to the development of policy, both in the regulatory framework for higher/tertiary education and in the ombuds sector.

About the Role

The OIA are seeking a strategic minded and experienced professional to lead their governance, executive office, and communications functions. As Head of Leadership Office and Governance, you will provide high-level advice and support to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Board of Directors/Trustees, and be part of driving the success of the organisation.

This is a key leadership role with responsibility for company secretarial duties, internal and external communications, and organisational oversight coordination. You will play a central role in shaping their strategic direction and promoting values of integrity, quality, openness, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as Chief of Staff to the SLT, supporting strategic planning, internal coordination, and effective, compliant and transparent decision-making.
  • Lead governance and company secretarial functions, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee internal and external communications, ensuring consistent and effective messaging.
  • Support the Board and SLT with risk management, reporting, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Lead and develop the communications, governance support, and executive support teams.

About You

  • Proven experience in senior executive and governance roles in complex environments.
  • Strong background in communication strategy, public relations, and/or media engagement.
  • Demonstrated leadership in implementing organisational strategy.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and advise senior leaders effectively.
