The Head Porter plays a vital leadership role at the heart of College life, responsible for the smooth and professional operation of the Porters’ Lodge — the central hub for information, support, and security for students, Fellows, staff, visitors, and guests. This highly visible and trusted position is instrumental in upholding the welcoming and safe environment for which the College is known. From ceremonial events and student welfare to crisis response and day-to-day coordination, the Head Porter ensures the Lodge is a centre of excellence in service delivery and community engagement.
We are seeking a organised, and approachable individual to lead a committed team of Porters across multiple College sites. The Head Porter will oversee fire safety and security operations, support student discipline and wellbeing, manage high-profile College events, and contribute to emergency planning and operational leadership. With a focus on team development, service innovation, and professional standards, this is a rare opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to one of the College’s most essential functions — safeguarding both tradition and modern excellence in a vibrant academic setting.
The successful candidate will be an experienced team leader with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of managing a 24/7 front-of-house operation with professionalism, discretion, and care. Strong organisational ability, sound judgment, and the confidence to take charge in emergencies are essential. Candidates should demonstrate proven experience ideally within a college, university, or similar institutional setting, but otherwise in a public- or customer-facing environment, alongside a practical understanding of health and safety, fire safety, and security protocols. A calm and authoritative presence, the ability to relate to students and staff alike, and a proactive, solutions-focused mindset will all be critical to success in this highly visible and varied role.
In return, you will receive a competitive salary, excellent benefits and conditions of employment, including a pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement, car parking and use of College facilities.
