BA (Hons) Design Crafts at De Montfort University sits within the Design Subject Area, in the School of Art, Design and Architecture, in the Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities. Consisting of three distinct but inter-related areas – Design Crafts, Product Design and Interior Design, we are well equipped to foster dynamic cross-disciplinary dialogue and practice.
Role
Design Crafts at De Montfort University involves undergraduate study while also supporting PhD provision. It is an area with a longstanding history and reputation, supported with extensive and dedicated state-of-the-art facilities within our city centre campus. The Design Crafts programme develops students into creative professionals who can respond to future global challenges and reflect the importance of sustainability and inclusivity in contemporary Crafts.
This cross-disciplinary degree empowers students to explore directed and self-negotiated projects, fostering innovative thinking and creative problem-solving. It focuses on develop high-level making skills through hands-on learning, material experimentation and digital technology. The core materials taught include glass, ceramics, and fine metals, complemented with fibre, weave, 3D printing, mixed media textiles, stitch, wood, and print. The design studio environment emulates professional practice and a collaborative community, which allows each student the space to develop their design process. Sustainability is a core value of the BA Design Crafts, our course and workshops embed regenerative practice and recycled materials reflecting DMU’s role as the Global Hub for UN Sustainable Development Goal 16.
This role is on a part time (0.2 FTE), permanent basis.
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a proactive, experienced and ambitious lecturer within the subject area of Design Crafts with specific expertise in digital design software, visual communication and design for industrial ceramics. You will have experience of commercial practice – design for ceramic mass/batch production, teaching in Higher Education, and be expected to contribute to the future and ongoing development of the subject area. You will have access to a range of training opportunities and facilities relevant to your on-going professional development/practice and the ability to develop and maintain your own scholarly and/or professional profile.
