Aston University, in partnership with Pulse Power & Measurement Ltd (PPM), is offering an exciting Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) opportunity. The project aims to develop an extended reach Radio over Fibre (RFoF) transport system using novel amplification techniques. It will be based at PPM’s Swindon site, within their ViaLite Communications division.

This innovative technology represents a first-to-market opportunity for PPM and aligns with a known industry demand. While off-the-shelf components exist, integrating them into a cohesive product requires new knowledge and expertise, which this KTP will provide.

PPM, a wholly owned subsidiary of BAE Systems, includes four business divisions. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing next-generation photonics products, working closely with Aston academics and PPM engineers.

Candidate Profile:

Applicants should have at least a Master's degree in Photonics/Optics, with relevant experience. A PhD is desirable.

Essential Skills:

  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills in photonic systems
  • Practical experience in photonic network design, testing, and optimisation
  • Proficiency in simulation tools (MATLAB, Python; ideally VPI)
  • Excellent communication and management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Desirable:

  • Experience with optical communications systems and test beds
  • Recent publications in high-impact journals/conferences
  • Familiarity with IP protection and collaborative reporting
  • Creative problem-solving and strong team-working skills

Main Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Development Team Lead and Systems Architect
  • Translate lab work into practical applications at PPM
  • Carry out numerical simulation, experimental testing, and prototype development
  • Maintain accurate project records and ensure adherence to safety protocols
  • Contribute to whitepapers, technical notes, and marketing materials
  • Support project milestones and deliverables in coordination with academic and industry teams

Project Team & Location:
