Who we are/Ko wai mātou

Sociology, Gender Studies and Criminology is a vibrant multidisciplinary programme, forming the largest academic unit in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Otago. To build on our success, we are seeking to appoint a Lecturer to join our team in February 2026.

The role/Te mahi

We welcome applications from strong candidates with a demonstrated focus on both gender and criminology. The successful candidate will teach into both Criminology and Gender Studies curricula as well as contributing to the wider programme.

Possible areas of future development could include:

  • Gender and work
  • Critical criminology
  • Criminal justice
  • Social theory
  • Intimacy, friendship and family
  • The future of gender and crime (e.g. abolition and utopias).

The successful candidate will also develop and maintain a programme of research and publications. They will contribute to the strong postgraduate research culture in our programme, and will be expected to supervise postgraduate student dissertations and theses.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

The successful candidate will be expected to have:

  • A PhD in Criminology, Gender Studies, Sociology or a relevant field
  • Teaching experience at tertiary level and peer-reviewed research publications
  • Some experience of postgraduate supervision and/or mentorship
  • Evidence of an ability to work with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution
  • The ability to contribute to the teaching, research culture and growth of the Sociology, Gender Studies and Criminology Programme
  • A commitment to contribute to teaching and learning environments that support engagement of students and staff with te ao Māori, te reo Māori, mātauranga Māori, and Pacific knowledges
  • Knowledge of the theoretical and methodological debates in gender studies and/or critical criminology.

The appointment range for this role is $97,377 to $114,943 per annum.
