About us

The Department of Theology and Religious Studies at King’s College London is seeking to appoint a fixed-term Lecturer in Islamic Studies for 12 months, ideally starting 1 September 2025.  This role is being advertised to provide cover for Dr Kazuyo Murata who has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship.   

You will contribute to a department that is known for its excellence in the integrated study of Theology and Religious Studies and for socially engaged, interdisciplinary work.

About the role

You will contribute to co-taught undergraduate modules including Global Philosophy, Religious Traditions and God, and to a sole-taught third-year module, Philosophy of Religious Life. You will also contribute to MA modules, possibly ‘Asian Religions in Global Context’ and ‘Religion, Spirituality and Health’.

You will have expertise in teaching the pre-modern intellectual history of Islam and its relevance in the modern period. You will play an active role in the administration of the department, showing an ability to be innovative in developing our educational offerings. Appropriate mentoring and training will be provided in the context of a supportive department and faculty.

You will be placed on an Academic Education Pathway contract (80% teaching, student support, educational leadership, innovation and administration, 20% research and scholarship).

This is a 12-month, full-time post (35 hours per week), starting from 1st September 2025.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • A PhD in Islamic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Religious Studies, Theology, or related relevant discipline/s
  • Ability to teach the intellectual history of Islam at undergraduate and MA levels
  • Strong administrative skills, and an ability to be creative and innovative in the context of a growing and evolving department
  • Collaborative spirit and ability to work with others in a collegial and supportive manner and contribute to TRS as a field
  • An inclusive approach to engagement with different disciplines, theological and religious traditions
  • A developing research profile commensurate with career stage
  • Ability to represent and champion the field of TRS and contribute to its development

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of Arabic and/or Persian
