Editor

Faclair na Gàidhlig

Faclair na Gàidhlig is an inter-university initiative, led by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig - the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture - to produce a historical dictionary of Scottish Gaelic comparable to those already available for Scots and English. The initiative is a collaboration between Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and the Universities of Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Strathclyde.

This is an exciting time to join our team. We recently launched the Centre for Faclair na Gàidhlig, based at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig; and we also launched our new, updated website containing the first published dictionary entries.   We are also in the process of developing Meanma, an in-house dictionary-writing system, work that is led by our Faclair na Gàidhlig colleagues at the University of Glasgow.

We are currently recruiting one full-time Editor to join the team and play a key role in establishing an historical lexicographical tradition for Scottish Gaelic.

You will have a good honours degree (at least a 2:1) in Scottish Gaelic, or demonstrable equivalent.  You will be a team player with the ability to work on your own and you will have an analytical mindset and meticulous attention to detail.

Salary:  £38,249 - £45,413 (National Pay Spine Points 30-36)

Term: Ten months in the first instance, with extension dependent on funding

Base:  Negotiable.  Occasional visits to the Centre’s base at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Isle of Skye will be necessary.

Closing date: Friday 25th July 2025 at 5pm.

Applications:  For further information and an application form, please contact Gill Morgan, Head of HR at: gm2.smo@uhi.ac.uk via the 'Apply' button.

’S e iomairt nàiseanta, eadar-oilthighe a tha ann am Faclair na Gàidhlig air a stiùireadh le Sabhal Mòr Ostaig – Ionad Nàiseanta Cànan is Cultar na Gàidhlig – airson faclair eachdraidheil a chruthachadh do Ghàidhlig na h-Alba coltach riuthasan a tha ann mar-thà do dh’Albais agus do Bheurla. Tha an iomairt na com-pàirteachadh eadar Sabhal Mòr Ostaig agus Oilthighean Ghlaschu, Obar Dheathain, Dhùn Èideann agus Shrath Chluaidh.

Bidh deagh cheum le urram agad (aig 2:1 co-dhiù) ann an Gàidhlig na h-Alba, no teisteanas/eòlas co-ionnan eile. Bidh thu comasach air obair ann an sgioba no gu neo-eisimeileach, agus bidh thu cleachdte ri obair sgrùdaidh agus ri dlùth-aire a thoirt air nithean mionaideach.
